More than 1,200 companies applied for the prize in 2013. The prize is awarded mutually by Huber Verlag für Neue Medien (a publishing house) and the Initiative Mittelstand (an SMB initiative). The jury, chaired by Maneka Gandhi, issued the following substantiation for awarding the national environmental prize: "The electric drive from Ziehl-Abegg for commercial vehicles, motor buses or waste collection vehicles almost completely reduces both noise as well as pollutant emissions". The prize was presented in Apeldoorn in the Netherlands, which is the headquarters of Ziehl-Abegg´s development partner, e-Traction.

Air-handling unit manufacturers are progressively integrating the Künzelsauer's Cpro fan impeller which was launched for the first time in 2011. "The interest in the latest development is even greater" comments Chairman of the Board Peter Fenkl on the ZAplus complete system initially presented last spring. Even though in Asia the sales figures are below expectations, the overall sales of the company group have risen by three percent. Ziehl-Abegg presented an improvement of its medium-pressure fan, the MAXvent, which is being launched on the market as the MAXvent owlet. But the eye-catcher and talk of the town right across several exhibition halls was the new development, the ZAplus. Along with 20-percent energy savings during operation, the axial system provides device manufacturers with significant technical and logistic advantages. "We are pleased that so many device manufacturers have informed themselves about the substantial simplifications in the design and logistics", says Fenkl. In consideration of the rising energy prices and the EU specifications on energy savings, 20-percent energy savings are a powerful economic argument on top of that. "Since our new ZAplus fan system is better than the EU Directive ErP 2015 even with the classic AC motors, with modern EC motors we can be even significantly better than required by the EU" adds Fenkl. Along with the perfectly matched combination of efficient individual elements, the composite material also permits new shapes, which have a positive selective influence on the airflow. The first prize in the „Green & Sustainable” category has been awarded to the centrifugal impeller Cpro made out of the newly developed high performance composite material ZAmid. Cpro ZAmid technology stands for energy savings and CO² reduction right from the start. The reduced energy usage during manufacture is followed by up to 15 % energy which is saved during use. Moreover, the material can be crushed after the end of the life of the impeller and is 100% recyclable, so there is actually no waste whatsoever. The permanent-magnet synchronous internal rotor motor PMblue has been awarded in the category „Energy Efficiency“. Especially developed for the air conditioning sector, the IE4 classified PMblue motor range has the highest efficiencies, even at low rotational speeds and in the partial load range. The motors stand out with their low-noise and vibration-free operation and are also perfect for very high rotational speeds up to 5,000 rpm.
