Trade journal “MM Maschinenmarkt” presents the very first Best of Industry Award

The specialist publication “MM Maschinenmarkt” has honoured Germany’s leading technology companies. In the industrial engineering category Ziehl-Abegg took the number one spot in the “Best of Industry-Award” with a bionic fan.

In an elaborate selection process, a total of 34 nominees were determined in ten categories between early 2014 and mid-2015. A jury comprising journalists and outside experts, together with 10,000 readers of “MM Maschinenmarkt”, then selected the winners in the respective category. The prizes were presented during a gala in the Würzburg Vogel Congress Center.

The jury was impressed with the radial fan which performs its task quietly, for example in large data centres - and requires 20 percent less electricity than standard units available in the market. This has been made possible through the clever design: “We drew our inspiration from the structure of trees to build a highly efficient and extremely quiet fan” says Norbert Schuster, Chief Technology Officer at Ziehl-Abegg. Schuster sees the award as further proof that the development engineers at Ziehl-Abegg are continually setting new trends in terms of new product efficiency. Journalist and presenter Florian Stocker also emphasised the fact that in a two-year continuous process involving flow experts and toolmakers Ziehl-Abegg has been working step-by-step towards the development of the ideal shape for a composite material fan.

In addition to experts within the editorial team of “MM Maschinenmarkt”, the jury of the “Best of Industry Award” also comprised scientists from various disciplines: Prof. Dr.-Ing. habil. Marion Merklein [post-doctorate in engineering] holds a professorship in production technology at the Friedrich-Alexander University of Erlangen-Nuremberg, Prof. Dr. Christian Diedrich holds a professorship in “Integrated Automation” at the Otto-von-Guericke University in Magdeburg, Prof. Dr.-Ing. Dirk Bähre is professor in production technology at the University of the Saarland, Prof. Dr. h. c. Dr.-Ing. Eckart Uhlmann is Head of the Machine Tools and Production Technology specialty department at the Institute for Machine Tools and Factory Management at the TU Berlin.
