Power plants are complex technical facilities that generate electrical energy by means of energy conversion. In a power plant, primary energy is converted into secondary electrical energy. In the energy conversion process, the primary energy used (e.g. chemical energy from fossil fuels, nuclear energy, geothermal or solar energy) is converted into energy. Depending on the type of power plant, further process steps may also be required to feed electrical energy into the power grid.

Power plants cover output ranges from a few kilowatts to several hundred megawatts. Solid as well as liquid and gaseous energy sources can be converted, for example coal, crude oil or natural gas. The range extends from conventional, but also regenerative power plants to compact power plant units that can also secure the energy supply on a decentralized basis.

Safe fans for cooling, aeration and ventilation in power plants

All energy conversion processes are lossy: In addition to the desired and required electrical energy, heat is generated that must be used or dissipated from the power plant, and fans can be used in this process. However, fans are not only used in power plants for cooling and dissipating the lost heat, but also for ventilating machine rooms and providing combustion air. Furthermore, fans are used in (emergency) cooling systems, which ensure the safety of the plant even in the event of malfunctions.

Which fan for which application?

Axial fans such as our FE2owlet or ZAplus models are mainly used for the ventilation of machine rooms, but also for the recoolers of cooling systems. In compact units such as containers, centrifugal fans can also be used under certain conditions. For offshore systems or for use in potentially explosive environments, we offer solution-related advantages, particularly with fans of the MAXventowlet series, which pay off in the form of lower operating costs.

Highly demanded and highly welcome: Technologies for better utilization of energy

Power plant technology and its development are strongly influenced by national and international regulations, e.g. the requirement to sustainably and permanently reduce CO2 emissions or the gradual phase-out of nuclear and coal for more climate protection. Global warming is just one of many arguments for the need for a worldwide energy turnaround; renewable energy sources such as the sun, wind and water are seen as the energy sources of the future, and in power generation the degree of utilization of the energy source used is becoming increasingly important. Power plants, in which a lot of surplus thermal energy is generated in the form of lost heat, can increase their efficiency and cost-effectiveness if they make the best possible use of this potential.

Smaller CHP plants or combined heat and power plants (CHP) are also becoming increasingly important. Among other things, they supply houses and swimming pools, residential areas and industrial estates close to their locations. The megatrend of digitization has long since reached this application as well: modern decentralized CHP units are already equipped with the necessary technology to enable remote access for controlling, monitoring and evaluating the plants. It is essential here that the control or regulation can be carried out depending on the energy requirements, which vary not only in the course of the day, but also in the change of seasons. Furthermore, these decentralized units can be virtually combined with the appropriate control and regulation technology to form a power plant network in order to cover peaks and provide the required energy.
