The IT and telecommunications sector has been on a continuous growth trajectory for many years. Increasingly faster and larger IT systems, computer and server rooms provide VoIP, SaaS and Cloud services and enable worldwide access to online stores, web-based services and websites around the clock. And there is no end to this digitalisation is not in sight, in fact: an increasing number of services offered by companies and increasingly also by public administrations are additionally or exclusively offered in digital form and require the corresponding technical infrastructure for this.
With increasing digitalisation, the demands on data centre operators are also rising steadily. However, increases in performance are always associated with increasing demand for efficient device cooling technology. For trouble-free and secure operation, computer systems and data centres must be cooled completely reliably and kept at a defined temperature level – 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.
The hardware used in the IT and telecommunications sector requires a lot of electrical power when in use, which is converted into thermal energy or heat. Without effective cooling, the sensitive electronics would be damaged by excessive temperatures after just a short amount of time, making reliable operation impossible.
Failures or disruptions are particularly critical in the areas of IT and telecommunications, and must therefore be prevented with all available technical means. Telecommunication services such as data processing, transmission and routing are required around the clock. This is why the IT and telecommunications sectors need air conditioners and fans that are as fail-safe as possible, whose performance can be precisely controlled, and which offer long durability and ease of maintenance.
How effectively cooling systems in data centres work is expressed by power usage effectiveness (PUE). The PUE value refers to the ratio of the total amount of energy used in a data centre to the amount of energy required to supply and operate the hardware. The lower the PUE value, the more efficiently the device cooling technology works. An ideal PUE value is 1.0, while a PUE value of 2.0 is standard.
To ensure the required cooling capacity, the systems used for device cooling technology naturally also need to be supplied with electricity. The power consumption of the cooling and air-conditioning systems often accounts for half of the total power consumption of a data centre, so in addition to the performance of the equipment cooling technology, its energy efficiency is also a significant factor. By using high-efficiency ventilation technology together with control technology that is perfectly matched to the motors and fans, the power consumption can be significantly reduced while maintaining the same performance in the long term.
To sustainably increase energy efficiency, it is advisable to use high-efficiency EC fans. Modern EC technology also offers a wide range of control options and bus solutions with which smart, demand-oriented concepts for device cooling technology can be implemented.
Incidentally, existing data centres can also be retrofitted with the latest fans and control technology without any problems in order to permanently increase the energy efficiency of the systems. Thanks to the compact dimensions of our fans and motors, retrofitting or conversion does not require any complicated construction.
