In the animal, fish and seafood category there are two application groups, as per the sectors of Economy. The primary sector includes livestock, breeding and aquaculture production – this involves agricultural ventilation, ventilation technology and ventilation concepts for stables and fish farms, as well as slaughterhouses.

The secondary sector includes the large and diverse field of meat, fish and seafood processing as well as the (further) processing of animal products (e.g. milk). This sector includes processes such as freezing, drying, smoking or controlled aging of meat, fish and seafood, as well as the ripening and preservation of cheese. Air-conditioning equipment used for livestock breeding must provide the animals, e.g. cattle, pigs, poultry, fish, or other freshwater or saltwater animals,  with enough clean, fresh air on the one hand and transport the used air (exhaust air, stable air) to the outside on the other. If necessary, the exhaust air is filtered beforehand to prevent pollutants and unpleasant odours from escaping into the environment.

The basics of stable ventilation – clever design with Royal League technology

One of the essential standards for the ventilation of closed, thermally insulated pig pens, cattle sheds, poultry houses, sheep sheds and horse stables is DIN 18910-1. It serves as a basis for calculation and planning, both for forced-ventilated stable systems and for those with purely passive ventilation, i.e. air exchange without fans.

DIN 18910-1 defines the air volume flow that is required in winter and in summer operation to ensure that the animals inside the barns or stables do not come to any harm. This requires the ventilation equipment to be precisely regulated: In winter, the exhaust air is discharged together with harmful gases and water vapour, but as much heat as possible is retained. However, in summer, a higher air flow volume is required to dissipate both the excess heat and the pollution in the space and the air. This is necessary to ensure that the temperature in the stable or barn remains at a level that is comfortable and acceptable for the animals.

When planning and implementing modern ventilation systems in livestock breeding applications, however, it is not only a matter of complying with DIN 18910-1, but also of taking into account the immediate surroundings of the system when routing and discharging the  exhaust air. For example, farmers and animal owners do not want to disturb their neighbours or antagonise residents in the surrounding areas when discharging odour-contaminated stable ventilation air  – especially at a time when agriculture and livestock breeding are observed more closely and questioned more critically than in the past.

A basis for modern animal welfare management is ISO/TS 34700:2016, which also takes into account the principles of the Terrestrial Animal Health Code (TAHC) and the World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE).
