Active harmonic filters

Control technology for a wide range of applications. Coordinated components from a single source from ZIEHL-ABEGG. The system approach is reflected in specially developed algorithms that provide an automatic mode for reducing harmonic effects on the mains. Users decide which type of compensation is made available to their power supply. Depending on specific requirements, the active harmonic filter provides harmonic compensation, power factor correction, or mains imbalance compensation. Thanks to the algorithms, individual settings can be reduced to support critical power supplies.

Compensation to maintain a high quality of power supply is standard practice

Compensation for displacement reactive power caused by linear loads has been applied to improve the power supply since uncontrolled three-phase machines were introduced. Their inductive effects are offset at the respective transformer substations by compensation systems with capacitors to support the power supply.

Demand-based compensation

With the further development towards efficient, controlled machines, systems, and devices – known as non-linear loads – the characteristics of energy consumption have also changed. In addition to displacement reactive power, dynamic distortion power is generated due to power electronics. Accordingly, compensation methods have expanded to include active analysis capabilities via current transformers, enabling them to support power supply quality on demand.

Active harmonic filters to support the power supply

Active harmonic filters primarily reduce harmonics. These occur due to the characteristic energy consumption of non-linear loads. Products featuring power electronics are indispensable in everyday life. These include LED lighting, IT and telecommunications equipment, frequency inverters, pumps, compressors, uninterruptible power supplies, electric vehicle charging stations, solar inverters, and many more.

Particularly critical infrastructure facilities, which both contribute to maintaining essential societal functions and utilise sensitive electrical equipment, such as hospitals, data centres, or airports, place high priority on reliability, voltage quality, and the stability of their power supply.

Choose a coordinated system with ZIEHL-ABEGG

To support the power supply, ZIEHL-ABEGG offers demand-based compensation of harmonics. The implemented SiC technology contributes to a reduction in power dissipation. Due to lower power dissipation, a more compact design of the active filter is possible, saving space in the control cabinet during planning. In addition, automatic compensation is available thanks to optimised algorithms, which can reduce configuration effort.

The different available active filter sizes of 15 A, 35 A, or 55 A filter current enable use across diverse applications. With control technology from ZIEHL-ABEGG for ZIEHL-ABEGG fans, you choose a coordinated system that supports long-term utilisation.
