Device Cooling Technology

Equipment cooling technology with a system: intelligent fans for equipment and electronics cooling.

Equipment cooling technology is a very versatile field of application. Electrical equipment generates heat through its work, as do electronic devices and components. Due to the continually increasing energy density in electronic components and the trend towards electronic circuits and modern semiconductor technology, the need for cooling, e.g., in classic control cabinet construction, is continuously increasing. The power loss and the associated heat must always be dissipated to prevent the electronics from overheating and damaging the sensitive components.

Precision air-conditioning units, fans, and blowers, which are often in continuous use, must be optimally matched to each other and the respective installation situation. Only a cleverly devised and optimally implemented cooling and ventilation concept can work with maximum energy efficiency. The following applies: The better the fans' controllability, the more precisely the ventilation system can recognize the current demand and react immediately to fluctuations.

ZIEHL-ABEGG develops, builds, and supplies intelligent ventilation systems for room and equipment cooling, electronics ventilation, and process air provision. This includes our biomimetically designed fans and energy-efficient drives as well as the appropriate control and regulation technology. In addition, we offer a wide range of accessories, e.g., air guide grilles or housings, to provide the right fan for every application and installation situation.

Quiet, efficient fans for cooling electronic devices

Electrical and electronic components, e.g., processors, transistors, resistors, and relays, react exceptionally sensitively to heat. If the operating temperatures are too high, they become much more susceptible to malfunctions and faults. Overheating can destroy the sensitive components and thus lead to failures and data loss. Such a failure is often associated with high costs for damage limitation and repair of the affected parts. In many systems, the most important thing is the highest possible availability - an overheating-related failure of the system is one of the worst-case scenarios for some systems and must be technically secured and excluded in the best possible way.

Due to their particularly aerodynamic blade design, the biomimetically designed fans from ZIEHL-ABEGG offer optimum air guidance, which is also very clearly reflected in the acoustic values. The minimum noise development for the required pressure and air volume can be achieved by exact design to the best operating point.

Reducing acoustic emissions wherever possible is also an important issue. Especially for ventilation systems that run continuously (e.g., for server air conditioning, in control cabinets).

Such pre-direction grilles are usually useful when there is limited space for the installation of the fans. The grille can improve the air guide function to achieve the lowest possible noise emission despite cramped installation conditions or slightly obstructed air path.

Optimise systems according to demand with accessories from ZIEHL-ABEGG

Matching our intelligent systems, we offer various additional components. The fans from our portfolio can be even better adapted to different areas of application and tasks. These include our newly developed, biomimetically designed ZAflow pre-direction or inflow grille. The grille is modelled on the natural honeycomb and, like the honeycomb, has an extremely stable and optimally conductive structure. The grille is easy to install on the fan. It can also be retrofitted - for example, on one of our biomimetic ZAvblue centrifugal fans or with the ZAPilot fan system.

Customised control technology for unit cooling and temperature control

Even if there are no noticeable malfunctions or failures, the electronics can be damaged over time by frequent rises or sharp fluctuations in the operating temperature, dust, or the wrong humidity. Electrical and electronic components age much faster if they are operated outside the optimal temperature range - the service life of a transistor is shortened by about 80 percent if it has to perform its work permanently or for a longer period in an environment with 75 °C instead of at a temperature of 55 °C.

Temperature-controlled fans are one way of counteracting this by using intelligent air technology as soon as the temperature rises and exceeds a predefined critical value. A sensor continuously measures the current air temperature and compares it with the setpoint value. If the measured temperature exceeds this value, the fan's speed is automatically increased by the connected control technology to provide more cooling or fresh air. In addition to the temperature, various parameters can be monitored on the control and regulating unit and set and readjusted manually or automatically. Depending on requirements, some fans can be connected to such a control and regulation system as a network.

Modern control technology enables operation that is always in line with demand and maximizes power and energy savings. Axial and centrifugal fans with EC motors score points with more precise speed control. They can be integrated into smart systems in many different ways. Our ECblue EC technology with an integrated controller is perfectly matched to the fan and is particularly easy to handle and use thanks to Plug & Play. The speed of the proven, low-cost AC drives can also be controlled with the help of a frequency inverter to operate existing or new AC fans more energy-efficiently and thus more economically. Various sensors, monitoring, and protection devices can be installed to regulate the voltage and continuously monitor the ventilation and cooling system. For visualization of the control options and ventilation processes, a clear and user-friendly display is used. All relevant parameters of the system can be monitored. This considerably increases transparency and user-friendliness, even in complex systems, and faults or problems can be identified, localized, and ultimately eliminated more quickly.

At ZIEHL-ABEGG, we think of cooling, ventilation, and control holistically.

The system concept of ZIEHL-ABEGG also goes beyond our systems: Our fans, motors, and control modules can also be retrofitted without any problems in the case of retrofitting, system extensions, or energy-related renovations and can also be integrated into existing systems without great effort. With the innovative technology and excellent service from ZIEHL-ABEGG, you can save on electricity and operating costs for unit cooling from day one and be sure that your air handling unit will continue to comply with the applicable standards and directives (e.g., the ErP Directive) in the future. We would be happy to advise you personally on our products or support you in selecting and putting together suitable solutions. Just get in touch and tell us about your requirements.
