Fans play an essential role in this. In wind turbines, they are used wherever air has to be moved, where not only ventilation but also temperature regulation plays an important role. For example, fans are used for generator cooling in order to dissipate warm exhaust air from the generator quickly and selectively, ensuring optimum working temperatures. Fans are also used for control cabinet ventilation, as the components used here are particularly temperature-sensitive. Fans are also essential when it comes to nacelle ventilation to ensure optimum operating temperatures regardless of ambient temperatures.

Wind turbines are one of the greatest areas on which hopes are pinned when it comes to generating electricity with renewable energies. This is because the performance of these turbines has been continuously improved through technical innovations, such as new materials and optimised blade geometries.

Due to the higher performance of wind turbines, the components used are subject to ever greater loads, which is associated with an increased heat load. Using special fans for wind turbines, the heat load can be efficiently reduced and cooling of the relevant components ensured, even at the height of summer. In addition, efficient cooling increases the performance and therefore the profitability of the entire installation.

When wind turbines are erected near residential areas, noise development plays an important role. ZIEHL-ABEGG fans also score in this area with optimized geometry.

In addition, innovative high-performance composites (e.g. ZAmid®, which combines the positive properties of steel and plastic) make it possible to realize the complex blade shape of the fans.

We have over 300 employees in the development team who work every day to develop tailor-made solutions, for example to be able to achieve lower flow losses . Our perfectly matched components ensure trouble-free operation of the system, even in critical environmental conditions. We develop complete solutions all from a single source, consisting of motors (AC and EC), axial and centrifugal fans, as well as the necessary regulation and control technology. Allow us to present: Our solutions in the field of fans

We have different fans for cooling and ventilation for wind turbines. For example, our fans for generator cooling are double-flow housing fans from the RD model range, which have a particularly robust and hard-wearing design. The fans’ welded housing can also withstand high vibration or shaking stresses and offers excellent corrosion protection. Plug fans with free-running impeller from the GR..C series are also used, among other fans with special designs.

We can also supply special versions of special fans that are optimally suited to confined installation spaces due to their particularly compact design.

The axial fans from the FE2owlet model range, the ZAplus and MAXvent are designed for high air flows and small to medium static pressures, and are particularly suitable for oil coolers, for example.

Plug fans with free-running impeller from the ER..C series or axial fans from the MAXvent family have been specially optimised for tower air cooling.

Electronic components and circuits, such as those used in large numbers in control cabinets, place particularly high demands on the operating conditions and are also incredibly relevant when it comes to the performance and safety of wind turbines. Our ventilation units from the GR model range are also available as special constructions for tight installation situations and can also be delivered as special designs for high to medium static pressures.

As well as fans for wind turbines, ZIEHL-ABEGG also provides frequency inverters for fan control. These are available in two different versions, as Fcontrol with integrated multi-pole sinusoidal filters, where no shielded motor cables are required. Frequency inverters ensure operation that is not hard-going on the motor and doesn’t reduce its service life. These frequency inverters are available in IP54 or IP20 protection classes. And if you need a cost-optimised frequency inverter for fan control in wind turbines with IEC standard motors, we offer Icontrol, a frequency inverter without a built-in sinusoidal filter, which is also available in protection classes IP54 and IP20. 

Fans are not only used for generator cooling and nacelle ventilation in wind turbines. Fans are also used to heat the blades, to transport the heated air evenly over every inch of the blade, thus ensuring safe and reliable operation even in winter. The single-flow housing fans from the RG model range are designed for medium air flows and medium static pressures and are available in special versions that can withstand high loads.

Our fan solutions for transformer cooling make use of crossflow fans or double-flow housing fans from the RD model range.
