Marine Applications

Area of application ships: Fans for ventilation for ship interior areas

On ships of all kinds – from freighters and container ships to luxury liners for round-the-world cruises – climatic conditions are of crucial importance. Ventilation systems for ventilation and air conditioning of different interior areas not only provide passenger comfort and pleasant working conditions for the crew, but also ensure fault-free operation of many other systems on board.

Ventilation systems for ships often work in continuous operation and must correspond to specific requirements. Some of the loads the fans and other components are subjected to will depend on the type of ship, such as constant movement, shock and vibration as well as humidity and salty air.

All ships sailing on the high seas are subject to the rules, regulations and approvals of internationally recognise classification societies, e.g. DNV-GL, ABS or BV, which are part of an umbrella organisation, the International Association of Classification Societies (IACS). In addition, there are the applicable regulations on fire protection, safety, accident prevention, etc., which of course also apply on board. For example, air conditioning and ventilation systems within watertight areas or fire zones must be designed as self-sufficient systems, and fan systems in potentially explosive atmospheres (e.g. for offshore facilities, machine rooms or warehouses, but also in the galley or bakery on board a cruise ship) require appropriate approval.

ZIEHL-ABEGG manufactures and delivers powerful axial and centrifugal fans for ventilation of interior areas of all kinds of ships. Thanks to our diverse biomimetic fan concepts and the perfectly coordinated control technology, ZIEHL-ABEGG’s sophisticated fan systems can be optimally integrated anywhere. Compact sizes, the use of standardised dimensions and easy installation in new or existing systems make our products real problem-solvers that are guaranteed to be the right fit, even in difficult, angled or cramped installation situations. Thanks to the innovative biomimetic blade design and corresponding, controllable drives, ZIEHL-ABEGG fans operate with maximum energy efficiency. They provide optimum performance, even with small sizes and in the partial load range and ensure sufficient pressure wherever it is needed, and optimal air flow at all times.

The Royal League of ventilation technology, individually tailored to on-board requirements

Whether it’s an air conditioning system, heat recovery, heating, cooling, ventilation or extraction system: ZIEHL-ABEGG delivers the Royal League of ventilation, drive and control technology, all optimally adapted to operation on the high seas, the requirements of the respective ship and the applicable standards and regulations. We have the right fan for the wide range of applications and requirements found on board, available in various sizes and designs (e.g. corrosion protection, enclosure, insulation, or made of stainless steel).

In addition to axial and centrifugal fans (for single- or dual-duct systems) that can be used universally and variably, our versatile portfolio also includes specialized fan technology, including spark-free, water- and gas-tight versions, a particularly hygienic kitchen fan, and various accessories such as housings, air guide grilles, or mounting aids.

ZIEHL-ABEGG marine fans can be supplied in DNV-GL tested and certified design. Depending on the requirements, we use drives from our own production or certified marine motors from other renowned manufacturers.

Thanks to our global sales and service network, our customers can always reach us we can quickly be there on site for them wherever they are in the world. Fans on ships – applications and operational areas

There is a huge number of different types of machine, operational and storage rooms, work areas, lounges, living areas and service rooms on ships where the right ventilation conditions are essential. This means that fans are required in almost every area on the ship, whether this is a container ship, LNG or oil tanker, bulk carrier , multi-purpose freighter, ferry or skyscraper-sized cruise ship on weeks-long holiday trips.

The wheelhouse, lounges and galley must be ventilated, and air conditioning units are increasingly being used. Cargo ships carrying refrigerated containers need container refrigeration to cool the refrigeration units of the loaded refrigerated containers so that the cold chain is not disrupted, even during long transport routes. On passenger ships, fail-safe, hygienically flawless and as quiet as possible cabin ventilation and airconditioning contribute significantly to the comfort and safety of the crew and passengers.

In engine rooms and machine rooms, the robust ventilation technology, often in continuous operation, ensures the removal of exhaust air<s>,</s> and the necessary air renewal and air purification. Fans for ventilating the bilge, where exhaust gases can collect, as well as condensation water from the air conditioning system, also need good corrosion protection and robust, water-resistant motors.

Large cruise liners, which may even have their own power plants with generators on board for electricity supply, house all kinds of ventilation systems that are also found in residential buildings, commercial kitchens, restaurants, and sports and leisure facilities on land. The difference is that the design of the components and the construction of the systems must comply with the special environmental conditions at sea and the classifications and regulations applicable to the respective ship.

Always on the right course with the Royal League of ventilation technology

With the future-oriented, environmentally and climate-friendly technology from ZIEHL-ABEGG , you will be playing it safe – both for new buildings and for retrofitting, expansion or energy-efficient refurbishment.
