FE3owlet

Biomimetic blade design for high performance and demanding applications
The FE3owlet’s biomimetic blade design applies key insights from the wing shape of the nocturnal barn owl, alongside other biomimetic concepts, to the development of the blade profile. The axial fan features a profiled, sickle-shaped blade and a serrated trailing edge. This design supports efficient airflow, higher air volumes and reduced noise. The fan blade’s leading edge is also inspired by nature. Its wave-shaped edge helps improve airflow into the impeller.

FE2owlet

Biomimetic blade design: axial fan with ZIEHL-ABEGG biomimetic blades
Insights from the wing shape of the nocturnal barn owl informed the development of the FE2owlet fan. The airflow noise produced during flight was a key consideration. Applying these insights to the FE2owlet blade profile resulted in a profiled, sickle-shaped blade with a serrated trailing edge. The biomimetic design supports efficient airflow, high air volumes and reduced noise.

ZAbluefin

Blue steel with depth: biomimetic, wave-shaped, highly efficient and quiet
Drawing on further biomimetic concepts found in nature, ZIEHL-ABEGG engineers and technicians applied these insights to the design of ZAbluefin. Its wave-shaped leading edge helps improve airflow into the impeller, even when airflow conditions are disturbed, contributing to better air performance. The V-shaped contour of the blade’s trailing edge, for example, also helps reduce potential flow separation at the impeller’s top and bottom plates. This makes the fan suitable for a wide range of pressure requirements.

ZAvblue

Biomimetic centrifugal fan for higher air volumes in a smaller size
The ZAvblue builds on the proven biomimetic blade concept of the Cpro impeller. Its design also draws on the growth of trees, whose branches withstand wind and weather. These insights informed the design of the leading and trailing areas of the impeller’s top and bottom plates. Applying these natural design principles to technical requirements has resulted in high efficiency at high air volumes, combined with a broad efficient operating range. The energy-efficient ZAvblue centrifugal fan features a biomimetic lightweight design that combines engineering with insights from nature.

ZApilot

Biomimetic concept: a fan system designed for greater efficiency
The search for a stable, lightweight design that uses less material led ZIEHL-ABEGG’s developers to look at bees. Their honeycombs combine high stability with low weight. Loads are distributed through the walls across the overall structure, helping to prevent concentrated stress. The hexagonal geometry provides stability, while the cavities help reduce material use. The airflow-optimised support structure uses a honeycomb design to contribute to stability and reduce costs through lower material use.
