Clean Room Ceilings/FFU

Fan systems with the highest performance and energy efficiency for cleanroom ceilings

Highly sensitive manufacturing processes take place in cleanrooms, where even minimal contamination, e.g., in the form of tiny dust particles or microorganisms, can lead to considerable impairment of product quality and high reject rates. Cleanrooms are used primarily in semiconductor production and in the microsystems industry and the manufacture of microelectronics, laser technology, and optics companies. Cleanroom environments are also frequently required in the pharmaceutical industry, laboratories and hospitals, and medical materials production. Likewise, there are also research and production processes in the food technology and industry that have to run under cleanroom conditions, i.e., in an almost germ- and dust-free environment.

Special challenges are posed to the air and control technology in cleanrooms. The air handling systems must work precisely and reliably to ensure sufficient airflow and optimal conditions in the cleanroom. In addition, an overpressure must always be maintained in the cleanroom with respect to neighbouring areas to ensure that no contaminated air flows into the respective compartment.

The required constant high air quality can only be achieved through the systematic interaction of powerful, controllable fans, filters, and various sensors and control modules (e.g., pressure control or for continuous humidity and temperature control). Cleanroom ceilings play a particularly important role here. The air is drawn in from above and blown back into the room through filters. In this way, the circulating air is permanently filtered to keep airborne particles' concentration (aerosols) very low.

High-performance fans from ZIEHL-ABEGG for fan filter units (FFU) and clean room ceilings

Cleanroom ceilings are elaborately designed and usually modular hollow or double ceiling systems subject to strict air purity requirements and may only emit very small amounts of airborne particles (aerosol particles). Most cleanroom ceilings are manufactured according to the client's requirements, e.g., in terms of airtightness, access options to the ceiling cavity, or options for mounting convertible partition walls with which individual rooms or workplaces can be variably separated.

Fan-filter units (FFU) are installed in the cleanroom ceilings, consisting of a fan and a filter. In addition, sensors and elements for heating or cooling the air can be integrated into the fan-filter unit.

A large number of FFUs are often installed in the ceilings of large cleanrooms, which is why the fans need to be reliable and safe to operate and, to a large extent, energy-saving and thus permanently economical.

The biomimetic centrifugal fans from ZIEHL-ABEGG belong to the top class of air technology. When developing our biomimetic fan concepts, we used the wings of the owl as a natural model. These wings, with which they generate the optimal air movements for precise, silent flight, have been reproduced for our fans. Thus innovative blade geometries have been realised, with which we have already been able to convince customers all over the world.

ECblue motor for fans in clean rooms

More energy efficiency through intelligent system solutions for cleanroom ceilings

The energy efficiency of the FFU plays a decisive role in controlling and limiting operating costs in the cleanroom. In particular, cleanroom ceilings where many units are installed offer enormous savings potential through the use of state-of-the-art technology optimised for energy efficiency. This is where our innovative ECblue drives come in: With EC fans from ZIEHL-ABEGG, FFU in cleanroom ceilings can be operated highly efficiently because the new electric drives with integrated control technology are real energy-saving wonders. Because the fans are designed for a maximum operating point, but in practice, they are usually only operated at partial load, ECblue motors offer a decisive advantage compared to conventional AC technology. They also meet the highest EMC standard.

High reliability and constant monitoring of the operating status are also indispensable in cleanrooms. ZIEHL-ABEGG offers sophisticated system solutions for cleanrooms and cleanroom ceilings, consisting of fans, matching control technology, and software. In this way, the aerodynamic performance of ZIEHL-ABEGG products can be optimally utilised, and the system unfolds its full potential.

Each FFU can be controlled individually via a central control unit (e.g., a computer), for example, to set individual setpoints for different room sections. Various parameters such as the airflow or the temperature can be set or automatically adjusted via the fans' speed control. For example, it can be set so that an FFU emits more cooling air if a machine that generates waste heat is working in the cleanroom. This also increases the energy efficiency of the ventilation system. This intelligent control contributes to a sustainable reduction in electricity and operating costs and ensures optimal conditions at every workbench and every work and machine station in the cleanroom.

Please do not disturb: The best air technology is also the quietest

The acoustic values of the fans are also of great importance. The finer the filter, the stronger the fan's pressure to generate to blow the required amount of air through. However, the people working in the cleanroom should notice as little as possible acoustically from the ventilation system's work. Here, the biomimetic fans from ZIEHL-ABEGG, which combine excellent performance with unbeatable sound values, are also the first choice. The employees working in the cleanroom are less disturbed by them when carrying out their activities. They can concentrate better, which is particularly important in these sensitive working areas.
